Lando Norris delivered a commanding performance at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday, overtaking Max Verstappen with relative ease and potentially reigniting the drivers’ world championship as the season enters its final stretch with nine races remaining.
Starting from pole position, Norris initially lost the lead to Verstappen but quickly reclaimed it on the Dutchman’s home turf, maintaining a comfortable advantage throughout the race and clinching victory as fireworks lit up the sky.
Verstappen secured second place, minimizing his championship losses, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took third after a standout race.
“It feels amazing. I wouldn’t call it a perfect race, especially after the first lap, but the rest was fantastic,” Norris said post-race. “The pace was strong, the car was incredible today, which allowed me to push and overtake Max, and then it was just a matter of managing from there. It was a challenging race but very enjoyable.”
Norris noted that he expected Verstappen to make a strong push around laps five to seven, but when that didn’t happen, he realized he was in a good position. “Max seemed to drop off while my pace continued to improve,” he added.
McLaren had a rough start, with Verstappen getting past Norris before the first corner and George Russell of Mercedes moving ahead of Oscar Piastri. However, McLaren’s superior pace soon saw Norris reclaim the lead on lap 17, just before the initial round of pit stops.
Norris then stretched his lead to over 20 seconds, showcasing his potential as a serious contender for the drivers’ championship. Despite this win, Verstappen still holds a significant 70-point lead in the standings.
Oscar Piastri finished fourth, and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez ended up in sixth, allowing McLaren to close the gap in the constructors' championship to 31 points.
This victory marked the fifth consecutive race win by a driver other than Verstappen, the longest winless streak for him since 2020.
Verstappen reflected on the race, saying, “We had a good start and did everything we could, but it was clear we weren’t fast enough. I tried to secure second place, and that’s what we managed.”
Norris will next have a chance to challenge Verstappen at the Italian Grand Prix on September 1.
